Lead us not into temptation

This publication is a response to the 2023 ISTD brief; to use the opening and closing chapters of a book of choice and create a typographical re-imagining of the text. Following my reading of Bram Stokers ‘Dracula’, I was interested in the Victorian perspective of female sexuality that Stoker explores through the dichotomy of the Occult and Christianity, and further his use of religion to ‘cleanse’ of of ‘sin’. My response is split into two sections; Part one- ‘The purge’, and Part Two- ‘They will rise  again’.
Part one explores Stokers metaphor of vampirism as an expression of female sexual empowerment, and thus is repressed and ‘cleansed’ through the means of Christian rituals.
Part two reframes the East and the Occult as a conduit for female sexual liberation. Female sexuality is expressed through the Eastern landscape and natural world, and thus the first chapter is subverted to display such liberation.
